The fluted dome calligraphy helm, known in Ottoman armory tradition as the Chichak, was the defining silhouette of the mounted warrior: a dome divided into bold vertical channels, each drawn upward toward a single rising finial, communicating speed, authority, and craft in a single glance. Worked entirely by hand in brass, this piece is a display sculpture of exceptional technical density.
Twelve vertical channels rise from brim to crown, each individually hammer-raised from a single brass sheet. Between every pair of channels runs a hand-engraved border of alternating leaf and rosette forms, each element struck separately with a chasing chisel.
The lower crown carries a broad Arabic calligraphic band, raised against a hand-textured ground and acid-darkened for sharp contrast. The front nasal bar terminates in a cartouche bearing an intricate Islamic geometric knot, hand-cut with precision. At the right side, a hand-formed ear and cheek guard extends from the dome, engraved to match the Calligraphy Helm’s border vocabulary. The aventail is constructed from individually hand-linked steel chain mail rings, suspended from a beaded lower rim.
